The Four Components of Our Work

Curriculum Design & Development - CESSE designs and develops curriculum materials for classroom use. The materials support students and teachers in inquiry-based learning of Earth and space science and related areas of biology, chemistry, physics, and geography. The materials engage students in authentic science investigations, creating rich, relevant and multidisciplinary learning environments.

New Technologies - CESSE explores, develops and disseminates innovative uses of technologies in education. These efforts emphasize computers as interactive visualization tools, the Web as a vast resource of data and images of Earth and space, and telecommunications as a support for student, teacher and scientist partnerships.

Research in Cognition & Pedagogy - CESSE conducts cognitive research, with a special focus on understanding how students work with and make meaning of images and visualizations of Earth and space. These efforts involve partnerships with cognitive psychologists, geographers, cartographers, astronauts and Earth scientists. CESSE also works with practicing teachers to conduct field research in effective pedagogy and curriculum design.

Teacher Professional Development - CESSE supports teacher professional development both as an integral part of the projects and through innovations in pre- and in-service teacher training. CESSE emphasizes reflective practice and inquiry-based learning, so that teachers experience the same approaches advocated for students. Methods include collaborative dialogue, workshops, interactive teacher guides, Web resources and CD-ROMs.
